Drama is a play acted on stage. Drama uses dialogue to reveal theme, subject, and characterisation.


Characteristics of Drama

  • It relies on dialogue.
  • It requires stage direction and descriptions.
  • Characters’ kinesics and facial expressions are part of the story.
  • Costume, props, and light effects accompany the story.

Terms in Drama

  • Act: Action meant to be represented by the cast at a particular scene.
  • Scene: Place and time location of a particular act.
  • Conflict: Conflict or complication refers to challenges, opposition, or obstacles that move the plot of the story.
  • Cast: Characters in a play or drama.
  • Aside: A cast communicates with the audience but is not heard by other characters on the scene.
  • Tragedy: When a story ends sadly; when the protagonist suffers some loss.
  • Dialogue: Conversations going on in a story.
  • Exit: When a cast leaves the scene.
  • Soliloquy: When a cast thinks aloud. A cast in his lonely moment speaks out what he is thinking.
  • Melodrama: A play with exaggerated events but which produces excitement in the audience.
