1.0 Register
Register refers to linguistic expressions specific to different fields and vocations. Register includes terminologies and coinages used in different professions and vocations. Professions and vocations include agriculture, trade, transport, administration, computer technology, engineering, building, law, publishing, journalism, etc.
Functions of Register
i) It is a mark of professionalism.
ii) It is one of the ways to build the language user’s vocabulary.
iii) It is used to establish identity for people who belong to a profession or vocation.
iv) Register can also be used to hide information.
Types of Register
A. Formal and Informal Registers
Formal register is the sophisticated and elevated dialect of a group used in formal discussions. Formal register is strict and follows the convention (manner and matter) of usage. The users of formal register are technical and expert audiences. Informal register on the hand is less sophisticated, casual and accommodates substandard variety of the language.
B. Neutral and Consultative Registers
Neutral register is the general expressions as those used in books, media and in official documents. It is less formal, less sophisticated but not casual. It is not too technical and can be understood by the general audience. Consultative register on the other is a professional dialect used in official setting.
C. Intimate Register
Intimate register is used by those in intimate relationship. It is casual, informal and conversational. It is used in families and those in close relationships.
